Geer van Velde (1898 - 1977)
Born in Lisse, Holland. Self-taught painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Lived in The Hague between 1904 and 1924. Moved to Paris to join his brother, Bram van Velde, in 1925. Moved to Haut-de-Cagnes, on the Cote d’Azur, in 1938 and to Cachan, near Paris, in 1944. Awarded first prize at the Menton Biennale in 1951. Represented Holland at the Sao Paulo Bienal in 1963. Initially worked in an Expressionist style, later associated with the Abstractionists of the Second School of Paris. Retrospective exhibitions held at Musee Galliera, Paris, 1966; Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, 1981-82, touring; Musee Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi, 1986; Lieu d’Art Contemporaine, Sigean, 1991; Musee Tavet, Pontoise, 1992.
